Nearly 10 years ago I left my job in the Public Relations world to join an industry I discovered I was truly passionate about, fitness. The same week I left my job, I sought out to obtain my Level 1 CrossFit Certification after which I secured a spot on the coaching floor as an Assistant Coach at BRICK CrossFit in West Hollywood. I took the time to shadow and absorb as much information as possible from the Head Coaches and after spending hundreds of hours learning and shadowing, it was finally my time to step into the role as a Head Coach too. During this time at BRICK, I lead group classes of 30+ athletes, coached private clients and also became the General Manager. I even spent some time working for CrossFit HQ, serving as the Regional Media Director for Southern California. I look back so fondly at this time in my life as this is where my future husband and I first became friends, met some of my dearest and best friends and pushed my body harder than I have ever done in my life. Some of my greatest memories during this time include watching our members achieve moments of strength they never thought possible as well as competing alongside my teammates on our Southern California Regional CrossFit Teams during the 2013 & 2014 seasons.

After the 2014 season, I was fully immersed in building my strength and skill work in the off season. However, in August 2014 I discovered I was pregnant with my first child. Out of fear of losing my athleticism during this time, I continued to do what felt familiar. I was afraid that somehow I would lose all my strength and my skill work that I had put so many years into building. I continued to train hard during my pregnancy and when I returned postpartum, I was dead set to make a quick comeback to the competition floor. During the birth of my son, however, I experienced a very significant perineal tear, leaving me with a pelvic floor that I would soon discover was not quite functioning as it should be.

After a year of dealing with symptoms and not quite understanding how to fix them, I took a hiatus from competitive CrossFit to finally focus on healing. I began working with a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist as I entered my second pregnancy and that’s when everything changed for me. I understood that I needed to honor this special time if I wanted to be an athlete for life. I began integrating strategies to protect and preserve my pelvic floor and core as best as possible during fitness and activities of daily life and I was able to enter my second postpartum phase with this new mindset. As I began to heal, I knew that I needed to be the coach for other women that I didn’t have for myself and made the decision to become a certified Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism Coach. Now as a mom of 3 and Women’s Fitness Coach, I hope to help open the doors of longterm athleticism for others, for women to understand that they are not alone through any season of their fitness journey and to become a valued resource for all women, no matter what age in my community.

Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism Coaches’ Statement

My support is not for how much can be deadlifted at 30 weeks. My support is given by guiding fully informed decisions about training, so an athlete can confidently determine risk vs. reward decisions.

My amazement is not at having an unmedicated birth, it’s for the bravery of having a baby, controlling what you can in the process and surrendering to the X factor that is birth with no fear, judgement or shame in choice or circumstance.

My message is not about glorifying the fittest of pregnancies and quickest postpartum returns. My message is to help care for changing and healing bodies, with how they function, heal and perform now and in the long run.

My praise is not about how flat a stomach is at 6 weeks postpartum. My praise is for acknowledgment and unconditional ownership of the transformative chapter that is motherhood, in ways that extend far beyond aesthetic changes.

My work is not about what fits my bias or telling you what you want to hear. It’s about understanding evidence, yet applying holistically and creatively to meet an athlete as they are, where they are.

My praise is not for the hard workout done on a due date. It’s for honoring changing energy levels throughout the entire pregnancy and postpartum, training when you can, resting when you should.

My effort is not to promote an invincible or fearful mindset toward training recovery. My effort is to guide an adjusted mindset with trust and patience during these unique chapters.
